Boil-and-bite fitting: what your instructions must say
Before a fitting card is translated or printed, match it to the exact product reference, components and version supplied. Use this list to collect and review the product's own instructions.
What the product's instructions cover
| Topic | What the product's instructions should identify |
|---|---|
| Product identity | Model, catalogue reference, size, component materials and the instruction revision or date. |
| Heating | Which components may be heated, whether anything must be removed, the water-temperature range including an upper limit, and how it is measured. |
| Timing and cooling | The heating duration, when timing starts, the cooling step and the check required before mouth contact. |
| Fitting and adjustment | The sequence, positioning, pressure and duration specified for the product; for an adjustable device, the adjustment controls and limits. |
| Trimming | Whether trimming is permitted, which component and areas may be trimmed, and whether this happens before or after fitting. |
| Refitting | Whether the device may be refitted and any limits or replacement criteria. |
Collect these details for each reference. A general message about an EVA material or a different product does not supply the complete instructions for the item you plan to order.
The insert card
- Identify the product and explain the supplied components.
- Include the intended users, warnings and limitations from the applicable product instructions.
- Use the fitting and adjustment steps from the product's instructions, with diagrams where the manufacturer provides them.
- Include the product's cleaning, storage, inspection and replacement instructions.
- Add the business details, language and labelling the destination market requires.
Sample, specification and card together
Keep the reference, component list, dimension drawing and instruction revision together when requesting a sample. Make sure the supplied sample and the proposed packaging identify the same version. Resolve differences before approving the card for print; ask a qualified adviser to review intended use, warnings and market requirements.
The samples page covers a comparison brief and sample quotation. The documents guide explains which documents and responsibilities apply.
Adjustable mouthpieces and other tray designs
For an adjustable mouthpiece such as the screw-set XMD-SNR-002, supplied with its fitting tool, ask for the frame and tray materials separately, the adjustment measurement and the instructions for the assembled device. A material name alone does not identify which parts may be heated or trimmed. For night guards such as XMD-NGD-007 with its fitting handle, sports guards such as XMD-SPT-001 and whitening trays, request the instructions for that product's own construction and intended use.
