Anti-snoring mouthpiece buyer's guide for brands
What an anti-snoring mouthpiece is mechanically, the difference between an adjustable and a fixed design, what to specify for the trays, the frame, the sizes and the case, and the documents and business responsibilities to agree before selling one. Written for a brand or an importer specifying a product, not for the person who will wear it.
Two designs. An adjustable mouthpiece lets the wearer set how far forward the lower tray sits, in steps. A fixed mouthpiece has that position set at moulding.
Documents. Ask your adviser to identify the applicable device route in each intended market. Which business holds the clearance, the establishment registration and the device listing depends on the role it takes, so agree that before ordering. A registration or a device listing identifies the business and the devices it reports; neither is an approval or clearance.
Adjustable or fixed
| Adjustable | Fixed | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Two EVA trays in a rigid frame, joined by a screw or a graduated slide; ask for the frame polymer of each reference | One EVA piece with the upper and lower channels moulded in the advanced position |
| Fitting | Request instructions identifying the components, fitting steps and adjustment controls | Request instructions for the exact one-piece construction, including whether refitting is permitted |
| Adjustment | The mechanism changes the relative tray position; ask for the range, increments and instructions | The relative tray position is set by the design |
| What to specify | The travel in millimetres, the step size, the frame material, the tray colour, the case | The advancement built into the mould, the tray thickness, the case |
Two adjustable mouthpieces in the range, XMD-SNR-004 and XMD-SNR-006, hold registered EU and UK designs.
What to specify on an adjustable mouthpiece
- Travel and step. Ask for the measured adjustment range, its start and end points, the number of settings and the size of each step. Ask how the measurement relates to the markings on the product; ask the desk to confirm the figures for each reference.
- Screw or slide. A screw adjustment is set with a small tool and holds its position; a graduated slide is set by hand and shows its position on a scale. Both are in the range: the screw-set XMD-SNR-002 and XMD-SNR-015, and the graduated slide on XMD-SNR-001.
- Frame. Ask for the polymer and component specification of the supplied model, such as the PC frame of XMD-SNR-003, and its permitted handling instructions.
- Trays. Specify the tray material, dimensions, colour and any permitted trimming for the exact reference.
- Breathing space. Request a drawing of any opening and the product's intended-use and warning information; do not choose a device for a wearer from this feature alone.
- Case and card. A vented case, a fitting card with the temperatures and counts, and a tool for the screw type. The fitting guide lists what the card must say.
Sizes
Request a current dimension drawing for the exact reference and each size offered. Ask for tray dimensions, thickness measurement points and the intended users identified in that product's instructions. Dimensions alone do not determine suitability for an individual wearer.
Documents and responsibilities by market
For United States sales, ask for the applicable device decision, intended use and instructions; identify the businesses responsible for registration and listing. For the EU, ask for the device-specific classification and duration-of-use rationale. Assess Great Britain and Northern Ireland separately, and agree the required actors and documents for Canada or Australia before ordering. A registration or a register entry identifies the business and the devices it reports; neither is an approval or clearance.
For a material declaration, finished-material test report, dimensional data, fitting instructions or production record, request the exact item for the quoted reference. The desk does not hold the clearance, and no product in the range is sold with one attached. The compliance by market guide sets out the roles, and the documents page lists what travels with an order.
What a listing may say
A mechanical description says what the product is: the mouthpiece holds the lower jaw in a forward position, adjustable in steps, moulded to the teeth. Claims about what that does for snoring or for any sleep condition are efficacy claims, and they belong to whoever holds the clearance and the data behind it. Insert cards and listings printed through the desk carry the mechanical description only. Before planning United States sales, ask for the manufacturer's model number, the applicable FDA decision and matching instructions for use, including the intended users, permitted claims and whether sale is over the counter or on prescription. The compliance guide lists the claims that marketplaces and regulators reject.
